Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

How do I know if I need massage therapy or MFR?

Massage therapy is great for those with stiffness, trigger points and muscle tightness or pain.  Myofascial release (MFR) is usually for those cases when massage techniques just aren't cutting it.  Your therapist can identify where you have fascial adhesion/restrictions and advise you upon assessment on your 1st visit.

We can also include a mix of 50/50 Myofascial release into your massage session also if deemed appropriate or necessary.  So, try not to over analyze or fret on which session to book.  You can always mix it up or change your mind when you get here.

How many sessions will I need?

Everybody is unique so there is really no easy answer to this question. Typically, if you have been experiencing pain and dysfunction for many months or even years it will take more sessions than if you come with a new injury.

After your 1st session your therapist will suggest their recommendations and treatment plan that is unique to your needs.  Many clients notice dramatic results in as little as 6 consecutive sessions.

How often should I see you?

Frequent visits are generally recommended for best results.  For example, 1-3 times per week in the beginning, and then after we've reached your treatment goals its common to reduce to a maintenance schedule that is much less frequent.  You can come less often, but it will likely take much longer to reach your treatment goals.

How long does a session last?

All of our treatments whether Integrative Myofascial Release, or massage therapy last 90 minutes.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Please come to your appointment with dry skin. Lotions and oils on skin can limit the effectiveness of treatment. Also, hydrating before AND after your MFR session encourage the best results.

Wear comfortable, flexible clothing that allows access to the skin. Options include a bathing suit, sports bra with gym shorts, or undressing to your comfort level with a sheet for coverage.

Be ready to relax and allow your body to unwind naturally during treatment.

Safety & Special Cases

Is MFR safe during pregnancy?

Yes!  Pelvic tilt or torsion is a common cause of pain and disfunction in the body.  This is treatable with myofascial release. We release tension and restore balance in the pelvic region, alleviating pain and improving stability so that you can avoid unnecessary pain and issues during pregnancy and delivery.  MFR can also help with neck, shoulder tension, and sciatica, and post-partum recovery.

A doctors note is required prior to treatment in the case of pregnancy.

Is MFR safe for cancer patients?

Myofascial release (MFR) therapy can alleviate some of the conditions that cancer patients experience, including pain, fatigue, and lymphedema, and discomfort caused by surgery, radiation, and muscle tension.

This article Myofascial Release as an Alternative or Adjunct Cancer Therapy: Biomedical Research and Scientific Rationale explains how MFR can be a powerful adjunct therapy for cancer.

A doctor's note is required prior to treatment in the case of active cancer diagnosis.  There are certain situations where MFR treatment will be contraindicated. Feel free to call so that we can discuss your specific issues and goals.
